AI often translates better than humans now. Not always

The Seznam Zprávy article from March 22 is valuable mainly because it compares specific outputs instead of relying on general impressions. The finding is not surprising, but it matters: classic systems such as Google Translate, Microsoft Translator and partly DeepL are losing their lead, while modern chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini perform better on more complex passages. The article explicitly says that DeepL, which was a top performer five years ago, is now “good at most for quick orientation-level translation,” not for production-ready text. This has a direct business impact. Translation is not a marginal discipline. It means export, customer communication, e-shop localization, legal documents and internal know-how. If AI translation quality is rising while prices remain low, pressure on agencies and in-house teams will increase. Especially in companies producing large volumes of standardized text, the savings can be immediate. Seznam Zprávy also lists subscription prices: ChatGPT from 210 crowns per month, Gemini from 220, DeepL from 183 and Claude from 420. For such sums, companies now get tools that no longer handle only translation, but also research, writing and coding. At the same time, the article honestly shows the limits. In humor, irony, double meanings and literary tone, differences still appear. Some systems preserve the meaning but lose the color of the language. Others produce text that is formally correct but lifeless. That is crucial in fields where style, brand or legal precision matter. Automation therefore does not mean the end of the human translator. It means the end of the translator’s routine share of the work. Human value shifts toward editorial oversight, tone and responsibility for the final message. This is exactly the kind of shift that Czech companies often underestimate. Not because AI is perfect, but because it is already good enough and cheap enough.
