BCG models 2050: AI can boost productivity but deepen inequality

BCG Henderson Institute published a scenario study looking at the world in 2050. Authors Nikolaus Lang, Alan Iny, Ulrich Pidun, Melissa Christensen, Jeffrey Sprong and Adam Job draw on an analysis of 100 megatrends, more than a century of historical data and dozens of expert interviews. The text deserves attention because it treats AI not as an isolated technology, but as a force connected with demography, regulation, climate, defense and wealth concentration. BCG reminds readers that decisions made over the next five years will shape the next 25 years. This matters for corporate strategy. Instead of one forecast, the study offers four scenarios designed to help leaders prepare for different environments. This is more practical than believing in a single path for the AI market. The most optimistic scenario, AI Abundance, assumes globally enforced regulatory standards, broad AI deployment and growth in labor productivity in advanced economies to 5.7 percent. BCG compares this with roughly 2 percent today. In this scenario, annual working hours fall from 2,100 to 1,600, a decline of 25 percent. The impact would not be only economic. It would change people's relationship to work, the financing of welfare systems and how companies plan capacity. The opposite pole is the Digital Darwinism scenario. In it, governments and institutions retreat, while corporations gain the dominant role. Although the world grows by an average of 4 percent per year between 2025 and 2050 and global GDP nearly triples, the gains are uneven. Regions rich in computing power extract rents from weaker economies, and the wealthiest one percent hold almost half of global wealth. For companies, this is a warning: deregulated AI growth can create new markets, but also political and social instability. BCG recommends low-regret moves: strengthening resilience, redesigning talent strategy for aging populations and AI, building flexible digital architecture, monitoring regulation and geopolitics and accepting a broader social role. For European firms, the combination of digital flexibility and trust is especially important. AI can raise productivity, but only if a company does not remain dependent on one platform, one country or one supplier of computing power. The study therefore moves AI from a debate about tools into a debate about strategic resilience.
