Google Opens Workspace to Agents and Bets on Controlled Data Access

Google is moving its Workspace business suite from a document environment toward a layer on which software agents can act. The change announced on May 1, 2026 is not just another product update. The Workspace MCP server is intended to let developers enable agents to work safely with company context and tools. Gmail MCP is expected to cover user profiles, search, reading, writing and message drafts. Drive MCP concerns files and permissions. Calendar MCP is meant to handle free-time search and event management. Chat MCP enables reading and sending replies. People dictionary MCP adds access to contacts and profiles. An agent is no longer only a writing tool The business impact is clear. Google is not aiming only at text generation, but at the everyday administration of companies. If an agent receives controlled access to e-mail, files and calendars, it can take over some tasks currently handled by assistants, salespeople, project managers or support workers. This can speed up routine work, but it also raises risk. A mistake will no longer mean only a poorly written answer. An agent can send an e-mail, work with a file, change a calendar or expose information that should have remained inside the company. Accountability will be the central issue Google is therefore also introducing a standardized layered model for agent tools, including APIs in Workspace. The reason is the risk of large-scale data access, API misuse and unintended data leakage. For company leadership, this means that deploying agents in Workspace will not be only a matter of buying a Gemini license. It will require permission management, audit, oversight of which applications can read and write data, and clear accountability for damage caused by an automated action. From a legal perspective, the key issues are personal data protection and trade secrets. An agent that reads e-mails, schedules meetings and uploads files processes sensitive data at scale. In Europe, this type of deployment will require legal review, role management and an evidentiary trail.
