Quantum advantage without a quantum computer? BCG shows a route for banks

On 19 May 2026, Boston Consulting Group published an analysis of quantum-inspired algorithms in financial services. The article matters because it separates the long-term promise of quantum computers from tools that can be used today. Banks and insurers do not need to wait for commercially mature quantum hardware. According to BCG, some optimisation tasks can already be addressed with algorithms running on standard processors and graphics chips. Authors Sara Baskir-Onur, Jean-François Bobier, Yudong Cao and Margot Li explain that quantum-inspired algorithms are not quantum computing, but classical methods that imitate some principles of quantum systems. The problem is familiar in financial management. Institutions use Monte Carlo simulations for portfolios, capital, liquidity and risk valuation. As portfolios become denser, segments, links and correlations multiply. Calculations become longer, more expensive and may still fail to find the best combination of risk and return. BCG cites an experiment with a synthetic portfolio of more than 1,000 segments. Quantum-inspired simulations on classical computers outperformed brute-force Monte Carlo in speed and portfolio quality. For a bank, this means the ability to test scenarios more often and respond to market shocks faster. Regulation still matters. Financial institutions must show that they understand their models, manage model risks and can explain outputs to supervisors. Quantum-inspired methods may be more accessible than quantum hardware, but they still require model governance, validation and auditability.
