SaaS comes under pressure from agents

In Ben’s Bites, Ben Tossell writes that the traditional software-as-a-service model is coming under pressure. Not because every customer will build a full replacement for established tools tomorrow. The problem is different: many users pay a monthly subscription for a full bundle of features, but actually need only a small part. Once artificial intelligence agents and tools for rapid workflow assembly make it possible to connect a document editor, database, custom interface and automation, some customers will start looking for cheaper and more precise combinations. The author uses the sharp phrase „SaaS may be dead“, but he also qualifies it in practical terms. This is not the death of software as a service. It is the end of the assumption that customers will keep paying for a closed bundle that cannot be adapted to their needs. Ben’s Bites points to companies such as WorkOS and Stripe as an interesting direction: suppliers that sell building blocks, interfaces and infrastructure. The business impact is substantial. Software companies have been valued for the past fifteen years according to recurring revenue, subscriber growth and low churn. If part of the market shifts to smaller modules, agents and application interfaces, it will become harder to maintain high margins on large feature bundles. The article also matters for corporate purchasing. IT and procurement departments often prefer standardised tools because of security, user management and contractual responsibility. Agent-based software assembly can bring more small services, more integrations, more access rights and more complex audits. Speed can therefore create a security debt.
