ChatGPT Work Is Designed to Take Over End-to-End Workflows Across Business Apps

ChatGPT Work is intended to move the service from answering questions to independently carrying out longer business processes. The agent can retrieve material from connected applications, split an assignment into smaller parts and create a spreadsheet, presentation, document or simple web application from the results. OpenAI announced the service on July 9. On the web and in mobile applications, it is initially available to Pro, Enterprise and Edu plans, with Plus and Business to follow. In the desktop application, Chat, Work and Codex modes are available across all plans, including the free tier. The technical foundation combines GPT-5.6 with tools originally developed for the Codex programming agent. According to OpenAI, more than five million people use Codex every week, and over one million already use it outside software development. The company presents this as evidence that agent-based work is moving into finance, sales, marketing and operations. A user can assign tasks such as analysing a monthly budget variance, preparing material for a sales meeting or creating a campaign from customer research. The agent displays progress, can request clarification and waits for approval before significant steps. Some tasks can be scheduled and continue without a connected device. The business impact lies in automating an entire chain of activities rather than a single document. ChatGPT Work can review research, write a campaign brief, create market-specific materials and preserve context between individual steps. Zapier used the system to review thousands of sales contacts each month. The agent monitored customer records and email, identified places where follow-up had stopped and prepared a weekly overview. According to Zapier’s Angela Ferrante, it uncovered at least one million dollars in underused sales opportunities. RingCentral used the agent to review product launch plans, Jira tasks and commercial timelines. The system flagged missing steps, obstacles and unclear ownership. Vaneet Seth said this allowed him to move from supporting one product manager to supporting about fifty. Virgin Atlantic asked the agent to compare its customer experience with competitors while preparing a five-year plan. Work that had previously taken weeks was reduced to hours, according to the company. NVIDIA replaced a spreadsheet-based conference planning process that consumed about 40 percent of the responsible employee’s time. Greater autonomy also increases the potential damage from a faulty instruction, a malicious document or overly broad permissions. An agent that can read email, modify files and operate business applications has access comparable to an employee. A company therefore has to define which steps require approval, separate read access from write access and retain records of executed actions. Employers also face a labour-management issue. When the system takes over parts of the work of analysts, assistants, salespeople or financial controllers, responsibilities must be reassigned. The agent may prepare the result, but the legal and economic consequences remain with the organisation and its named managers.
