Data Centers Could Move Into Orbit. BCG Says They May Capture Up to 15 Percent of the Market by 2040

BCG expects orbital data centers to reach technical maturity within five to ten years, but not to beat terrestrial infrastructure economically. Today they cost roughly 2.5 to three times as much, and even realistic technological progress will not eliminate the premium. Even so, they could capture 10 to 15 percent of the global AI data-center market by 2040, particularly for workloads where data sovereignty matters or immediate response is not essential.
