UK grants regulatory justification for Rolls-Royce small modular reactor design

The UK government has granted regulatory justification for the small modular reactor (SMR) design developed by Rolls‑Royce SMR, marking the first time an SMR has received such approval in the country. The decision was made by Emma Reynolds and confirms that the technology meets the requirements set out in the UK’s Justification of Practices Involving Ionising Radiation Regulations 2004. This stage represents an early but significant step in the regulatory process required before a new nuclear technology can be deployed.
