Present the team vision and common goals

People find it easier to work together towards one aim when they know exactly what that aim is. As Entrepreneur.com states, a shared vision and clearly defined goals give work a sense of purpose, and help each member of the team see how their efforts contribute to the overall outcome.

Encourage open communication

Without quality communication, a team cannot be united. Create an environment where people can openly express their opinions, ideas and concerns, and are not afraid to ask questions. Transparency in communication reduces the risk of misunderstandings and strengthens mutual trust.

Appreciate and acknowledge achievements

Managers often forget about sincere praise for a job well done or public recognition of a particular employee, despite these having an incredibly positive effect on team morale. It is not only about motivating the individual in question but also showing other team members their work has meaning, and that if they strive to contribute to shared goals, public recognition will also await them. This is a major motivating factor.

Create opportunities for informal gatherings

Informal interactions outside work duties help colleagues get to know one another better and form closer relationships. Shared lunches, voluntary sports activities or team outings can all significantly strengthen a feeling of mutual belonging.

Promote cooperation instead of rivalry

Healthy competition can be motivating but excessive rivalry divides co-workers. Set up processes and tasks so that subordinates cooperate and share knowledge with one another rather than compete for recognition or rewards.

Lead by example

You will best support team spirit, cooperation and a sense of belonging by honouring these principles yourself in your daily work. Be willing to help subordinates, support colleagues, and share both your successes and setbacks with them. Your behaviour sets the standard for the entire team.
