Could you be a toxic manager? Some warning signs

Toxic management allows no space to talented employees, suppresses the potential of the whole team, and creates a toxic and psychologically unhealthy environment. Unfortunately, this is something managers often engage in without fully realising it. Here is a list of signs which should serve as a warning that your management style may also exhibit a certain toxicity.

Poor and ineffective communication

According to a LinkedIn Pulse article, the foundation of effective team work and a healthy workplace atmosphere is clear and effective communication. If communication from team leadership or among team members is non-transparent, ineffective or otherwise poor, it may be a sign of toxic management.

High levels of stress in your team

Constant rush and stress in the workplace, where everyone, including the manager, is permanently under pressure, has a toxic effect on both employees’ mental health and the productivity of the entire team.

Absence of friendly relationships at the workplace

A good manager cultivates friendly relationships at the workplace. Their absence, or even their active suppression, is an unsustainable approach which can cause serious problems in the long term.

Unwillingness to help one another

In a well-functioning team with high quality and inspiring leadership, its members support one another. If such mutual cooperation is absent, something is wrong with the leadership of the team itself.

Non-transparent behaviour

Gossip, non transparent conduct, secrecy and outright lying are all vices that should not occur in a well functioning team.
