Busy manager: how to lead multiple teams at once efficiently

The classic idea of a manager is that they are in charge of only one team of employees. In practice, however, situations may arise in which two or even three teams report directly to one person, whether temporarily or in the long term. In such cases, how can the teams be led effectively? Here are some tips.

Understand the specific needs of each team

First of all, it is important to realise that every team has different preferences, needs and working styles. Even though your goal should ideally be to unify working styles and processes, some aspects will always remain different and a manager must be familiar with the natural specifics of the teams which are under their supervision.

Don't show favouritism and maintain a unifying and consistent managerial style

Following on from the previous point, it is important to emphasise that knowing the specific needs of each team does not mean showing favouritism, paying more attention to one team or excusing shortcomings you would not tolerate from other teams. It is necessary to maintain the same managerial style, avoid favouring any team and ensure that no team is neglected.

Set clear priorities across all teams

To make your work easier, and above all to ensure all teams are heading in the same direction, set clear priorities that everyone should follow. Create a common vision for all teams to work towards, which will motivate them to collaborate both within and across teams.

Consider introducing sub-managers

Think about whether it would be appropriate to introduce the role of individual team managers who would help you with communication, monitoring efficiency and productivity, and people management within each team.
