Leaders May Make Poor Decisions When They See Only Part of the Problem

Managerial decision-making often fails when a leader mistakes experience for a complete picture of reality. Industry knowledge, quick judgment, and confidence are useful only when a manager works with a sufficiently broad set of information. In an environment where customers, technologies, costs, and employee expectations change, old experience can mislead. A manager usually hears mainly from people with direct access to the calendar: close colleagues, superiors, selected specialists, or the loudest members of the team. The perspective of customer support, operations, junior employees, or people who will live with the consequences often reaches the manager less often. The result may be a decision that makes sense in the meeting room but does not work in operations. Expanding perspective is not the same as collecting random opinions. A leader must create conditions in which people can share uncomfortable information. If an employee expects punishment, silence, or irony, they will prefer to hide the problem. Trust comes from repeated contact, the ability to tolerate disagreement, and a willingness to change assumptions. Before an important decision, several simple questions are useful. Who is missing from the table? Who will bear the consequences of this step? Which customer, team, or partner sees the situation differently? What evidence would show that the original assumption no longer holds? These questions do not slow management unnecessarily. They can prevent a fast decision that will later be expensive to fix. A good manager therefore does not decide only on the basis of what they know. They actively investigate what they do not see. In practice this means moving closer to operations, speaking with people outside the usual circle, and treating disagreement as a source of information, not as a threat to authority.
