Empathy does not mean softening bad news until the employee no longer understands what the manager is actually saying

An effort to protect the relationship can lead a manager to vague feedback that deprives the employee of the chance to correct the problem. Research shows that people often postpone negative feedback precisely because they fear damaging the relationship. Respectful leadership, however, does not mean preventing every disappointment. A manager should communicate the essential information in time, explain the decision and state clearly what the employee can do next.
