The manager's task is not to hold a generic motivational meeting, but to obtain information needed for further planning. Forbes recommends finding out before the intensive autumn period what became more difficult over the summer, what employees need, and whether they have sufficient support. According to the cited Gallup figure, managers account for 70 percent of the variation in team engagement, while global employee engagement fell to 20 percent in 2025, the lowest level since 2020. The practical value lies especially in identifying problems that have not yet appeared in headline metrics. An employee may still be completing tasks while working in a way that is unsustainable over the long term. Another may be waiting for a management decision that will block an important project in the autumn. Part of the team may still not understand changed priorities after a reorganization. The later these issues are addressed, the more expensive they become to solve once fourth-quarter deadlines are already running. Simple questions can be useful. What gave you energy over the summer that you want to keep? What would help make the next four months sustainable? Where do you need more clarity, support, or collaboration from your manager? The goal is not to collect general opinions, but to turn answers into decisions: change a priority, remove an obstacle, add resources, or clarify accountability. If the company has gone through change, leadership should name the situation. Trying to cover uncertainty with another set of goals will not remove it. Employees usually know that something has changed; leadership silence merely creates room for their own interpretations. It is equally important to explain again why specific priorities matter, so the final part of the year does not become only a series of urgent tasks without shared context. Autumn preparation therefore does not have to mean another planning meeting.
