Chipotle adds a step between employee and manager. Future leaders are expected to learn directly on the job

Flattening corporate hierarchies is not the only route to more efficient management. Chipotle is moving in the opposite direction by expanding a role that combines ordinary operational work with shift planning, inventory management and coaching colleagues. By the end of 2027, it wants the role in all 4,200 restaurants. The company is using it both to support operations and to prepare future leaders without moving employees directly from specialist work into full managerial responsibility.
