Four obsolete management styles that suppress your team's potential

Among team managers, there still sometimes persists the idea that subordinates must be constantly controlled, assigned tasks, and reprimanded in order for them to work efficiently. This notion, like many others, is misguided and only serves to suppress employees' potential. Here are four management styles which are now outdated and should be avoided if you want your team to thrive.

Autocratic team leadership

If you believe that you alone are right and hold absolute authority over everyone, you may be exhibiting an autocratic leadership style. This approach, which over time can significantly frustrate and demotivate employees, allows no space for discussion or debate. As a result, it fails to leverage the talents and capabilities of subordinates.

Micromanagement

Do you constantly stand behind your employees, watching every move they make? Does delegating tasks take you an unreasonably long time because you delve into every tiny detail? If so, you may be practising micromanagement, which limits your employees’ ability to grow and work independently.

Conservative team leadership

In today's environment, change is constant and extremely fast-paced. An effective manager must be flexible and adaptable. If a team leader is overly conservative, the team quickly begins to stagnate and fails to seize opportunities that arise through market and technological development.

Leading through fear

Managers who threaten subordinates with dismissal or treat them in a hostile manner will not succeed in the long term. People are far more effectively motivated by positive factors such as visions, benefits, development and praise. Leading through fear is a long-outdated approach.
